About This Item

London: James Blackwood & Co., Paternoster Row., 1868. Fair. Second edition (following the similarly undated London: Houlston and Wright edition (c.1857))? 8vo, pp. xxvi, 322 + frontispiece and illustrated title page, and 60 engravings: lacks the fold-out map. Original red cloth, lettered, ruled and decorated in gilt to spine and upper board ("The Life of Dr Livingstone"), blind-ruling and decoration to bottom board. Bevelled edges. All edges gilt. Shabby: dust-soiled, rubbed, spine ends frayed, corners bumped and worn. Hinges cracked, boards only just attached, shaken. PO stamp to ffep, handling marks and grubbiness, occasional foxing. Fair. A reading copy of an early title about the Scottish explorer. Jisc LHD lists six holdings in the UK of the Blackwood edition (BL, Bodleian, UoCambridge, NLS, NLW/ LGC and SOAS). The New York Public Library's copy of the Blackwood edition (digitised by the HathiTrust trust) suggests a later publication date, with "[1879]" added to its title page; the UK libraries, however, all suggest the earlier dates of 1868 or 1869. A Scottish edition was also published by R. Forrester of Glasgow [ca.1870]. In its later (still undated) edition, Blackwood subsequently corrected its misspelling of the missionary's name, adding the 'e', but simultaneously, removing mention of the map from the final line of the subtitle.
