About This Item

1840. Scarce Tract on Judicial Reform in Scotland A Member of the College of Justice. A Letter to the Hon. Fox Maule, M.P., Chairman of the Committee of the Committee of the House of Commons Appointed to Enquire into the Administration of the Law of Scotland, On Some Points Connected with the Subject of that Enquiry. Edinburgh: Sold by Adam and Charles Black, 1840. 51, [1] pp. Octavo (7-1/2" x 4-1/2"). Disbound stab-stitched pamphlet, edges speckled red. Title page and following four leaves detached, title page separated from this group. Moderate toning, light foxing in a few places, light soiling to title page and final leaf. $250. * This scarce tract on judicial reform was written in response to judicial reform efforts in Scotland in the mid-nineteenth century, specifically the proposal to reduce the number of judges. The anonymous author heavily criticizes the politicization of the reform process and advocates for more judicial staff, not fewer. OCLC locates 4 copies of this title, 2 in North America (University of Minnesota Law School, New York Public Library).
