Octavo, pp. xix, [1], 258, [2], [16] (advertisements). 2 tinted lithographic plates including frontispiece, plus 18 coloured plates of strata of which 5 are fold-out. Map of Alston Moor to pocket to lower board. Original blind-stamped diced burgundy cloth with gilt titles to spine. Spine sunned, and creased at tips. Armorial bookplate to front paste-down; no annotation or inscriptions. Scattered foxing, mainly to prelims and catalogue, and edge of textblock; a few leaves corner creased. 4 cm tear to Plate IX at hinge, affecting margin rather than illustration. Rare. Wallace's classic study of the lead mining region in North East England including the formation of the deposits and detailed accounts of individual veins in the district.
