About This Item

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1959. This Stated First Edition (and, unless it's stated, it's not) is in Fine condition with a Fine, price-unclipped dust jacket. The dust jacket has light edge rubbing, a tiny 1/8-inch tear at the rear spine seam, and a small red dot next to the word "Last" on the front panel. (Click on photo.) The book is bound in a satin-like black cloth with die-stamped gilt spine titles and design elements. The book has top-edge red stain. The book is clean and bright throughout, with the signature of the original owner on the front free endpaper, with a March 20, 1959 date. The rear endpaper has the paste-down New York Times book review from March 15, 1959, which includes a photo of Mann visiting Goethe's house in Frankfurt, 1949. The book has a frontis photograph of Thomas Mann. The essays were translated from the German by Richard and Clara Winston and Tania and James Stern. They essays' titles are On Schiller, Fantasy on Goethe, Nietzche's Philosophy in the Light of Recent History, Chekhov, and, for an Appendix, the short piece, A Weary Hour from 1905 is also included. I've placed the dust jacket into an archival Brodart protective sleeve. The book measures 6 by 8 5/8 inches and includes 211 numbered pages plus an unnumbered Bibliography and A Note about the Author. This is a truly special collectible for any Thomas Mann enthusiast. . Stated First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
