About This Item
New York, NY Charles Scribner's Sons, 1896. Hardcover First Ed, unstated. First Ed, unstated, as per Scribner usage at time of publication. Very Good: shows light wear to extremities; mild rubbing; considerable spine lean; faint soiling; the outside edges are lightly tanned, the interior pages less so, as production values are fairly high. Binding secure; text clean. Despite some flaws, remains sturdy and quite presentable. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. 363pp. Grass green cloth with white stripes, art nouveau cover design in gilt and with maroon lettering. Hardback: No DJ 'as issued'. Decorated Cloth. This novel was filmed twice during the silent film era, once in 1913 and again in 1924 (with Virginia Vali in the starring role) ; both films are, unfortunately, lost.
Synopsis
On a wintry morning at the close of 1690, the sun shining faint and red through a light fog, there was a great noise of baying dogs, loud voices, and trampling of horses in the court-yard at Wildairs Hall; Sir Jeoffry being about to go forth a-hunting, and being a man with a choleric temper and big, loud voice, and given to oaths and noise even when in good-humour, his riding forth with his friends at any time was attended with boisterous commotion.
