About This Item

Japan: Pan-Pacific Science Congress, 1926. Wraps. Very Good. 30 pages. Stapled printed wraps. Tipped in at rear is a folding multi-color 13 x 10 3/8 inch map "Topographical Map of Central Kinki Environs of the Cities of Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, and Kobe". Some minor sunning, a few small stains. Some penciled notes throughout. Printed by the Tokyo Printing Co., Ltd. Executive Office: Rooms of the National Research Council, Department of Education, Tokyo (on back wrapper). Wraps. Unlike most travel guidebooks, the entries in this pamphlet are written by various scientists from the region: Geography, Geology, Botanical Notes, Insect Fauna, and a brief guide to the places the Congress-Party are scheduled to visit. Even scientists need some time off!

Nature volume 119, page 178 (29 January 1927) contains a useful abstract about the Congress for those not familiar with it: "The third Pan-Pacific Science Congress was held at Tokyo on Oct. 30—Nov. 11, 1926, under the auspices of the National Research Council of Japan and through the generosity of the Imperial Japanese Government. It must well have been one of the most remarkable scientific meetings ever held. The main objects of the Congress, like those of the first held in Honolulu in 1920, and of the second held in Australia in 1923, were (1) to initiate and promote co-operation in the study of scientific problems relating to the Pacific region, more especially those affecting the prosperity and well-being of the Pacific peoples and (2) to promote a feeling of brotherhood and to strengthen the bonds of peace among Pacific peoples. It was laid down that all branches of physical and biological science formed proper subjects for discussion, provided that they bore upon some Pacific problem."

OCLC Worldcat notes two copies of this pamphlet, and two other variations.
