About This Item
Evanston: W. M. Carpenter, 1929. First edition. One of 100 copies for private circulation. [Richards B83]. First book appearance of "Speech on Behalf of the Old Boys" and first appearances of several letters. A history of Kipling's prepatory school by Chicago manufacturer William Montelle Carpenter, whose Kipling collection is now in the Library of Congress. Illustrated with photographs. 8vo vellum backed blue paper boards lettered in gilt on front and spine. Original glassine present though significantly chipped. Lacking the slipcase. Carpenter's bookplate (with Kipling quote) on front pastedown with inscription above reading, "For Herbert M. Carpenter [erasure] Evanston, Ill. June 14 [corrected from 24], 1951." It appears "Herbert" has been corrected also. (Brothers!) Typed errata slip tipped to free endpaper differs from another we have examined. It lists only 2 items (vs. 3) and the wording in the second correction differs slightly. Offset from bookplate on endpaper otherwise fine. A unique copy of a scarce title.
