About This Item

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1940. First US Edition/First Printing. Hardcover. Poor/Fair. Stated First American Edition. A well-read ex-library copy in salmon colored cloth with jagged blue design motif and type. Fraying/rubbing through cloth at corners/spine ends and a few spots at board ends. Some letters stamped totop page ends that were tinted blue at one point. Discoloration/soiling to board and page ends. Some paper residue from jacket flaps to both pastedowns and stamps to front pastedown. Hinge separated at verso of ffep with mull showing, but still holding. Page preceding rfep torn out which does not affect text. General wear, some small stains/smudges and corner creases. Tanning to endpapers. Jacket is approximately 1/4 inch short as jackets of this era were cut down to fit jacket protectors of the time which left a black residue along bottom and top edges of jacket, inside and out. Jacket is unclipped ($2.00), but bottom third or so is torn off due to prior owner trying to separate from book. About half of the missing piece remains and will be set in place in jacket protector. Inside of flaps have paper scarring due to removal from endpapers. Some foxing to inside of jacket and rear panel, short tear to top of spine and general edgewear/rubbing and marks. Colors remain surprisingly bright.

Synopsis

It is 1940 and Mr Graham, a quietly-spoken engineer and arms expert, has just finished high-level talks with the Turkish government. And now somebody wants him dead. The previous night three shots were fired at him as he stepped into his hotel room, so, terrified, he escapes in secret on a passenger steamer from Istanbul. As he journeys home – alongside, among others, an entrancing French dancer, an unkempt trader, a mysterious German doctor and a small, brutal man in a crumpled suit – he enters a nightmarish world where friend and foe are indistinguishable. Graham can try to run, but he may not be able to hide for much longer...
