About This Item
London: T. And W. Boone, 1841. Two volumes complete - Volume One - xiv, 412pp, plates and Volume Two - vii, [1], 482pp, plates. Later half calf and marbled paper over boards, smooth back divided into three unequal panels, title label to second panel, other panels with volute corner pieces and fleurons to top and bottom, all edges marbled with marbled endpapers. Internally some light foxing, title and frontispiece to volume one foxed, occasionally slightly heavier in patches but mainly to margins. Small round Selborne library stamp to foot of reverse of titles and to bottom margin of one text leaf, otherwise fairly clean. Previous owner's armorial bookplate to front pastedowns. Bound without the advertisements, with all plates and maps called for. "Both the journeys described in these volumes were undertaken for the Royal Geographical Society. They met with disasters. The first expedition landed near Hanover Bay, and made the discovery of a river and much useful territory. In a skirmish with the natives Grey was badly wounded by a spear and was forced to abandon the expedition. The second journey was for the exploration of the west coast, north and south of Shark's Bay. The Gascoyne River was discovered, but a hurricane damaged their stores, their boats were wrecked, and the party had to set off for an overland tramp of three hundred miles to Perth. All dropped out on the journey except Grey. Fortunately rescue parties were able to save all but one" (Ferguson III:195). Ferguson 3228. First Edition. Half Calf and Boards. Good+. 8vo.
