About This Item

Paris: Ancienne Maison Quantin / Librairies-Imprimeries Reunies, 1893. First Edition . Quarter Leather. Very Good Plus. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Paris: Ancienne Maison Quantin / Librairies-Imprimeries Reunies [1893]. In French. First hardbound edition [edition in wraps was issued the same year; priority unknown to me]10.25" x 8.25",5 lbs. 324 + 2 pp. Quarter period black calf and dark green cloth, lettered and decorated in gilt, marbled endpapers. Spine ends lightly rubbed, corners just touched; cover gilt device a bit worn; front hinge cracking before title page, still strong; some toning to flyleaves, notation in French, "Marius Prix d'Excellence" at ffep. Otherwise, much better than VG, approaching near fine [graded as Near Fine by an experienced previous owner]. A sturdy and handsome copy. The first hardcover edition Leo Claretie's remarkable work on the history, fabrication, and [to a degree]the social integration of toys, through to his era in the later 1800's. Les Jouets has been called the "bible" of that subject matter; Claretie [1862-1924] was an internationally highly-regarded expert on the subject. Replete with illustrations - 300 "dans le texte" as well as 13 plates, of which six are in full color [see scans], including at least one by Emile Bayard. Scarce. L21
