About This Item

136 pp. Zionism, the movement within the Jewish people that strives for a Jewish National Home in Palestine, grew in popularity during the 1930s. Because on the one hand there was a great need for farmers and craftsmen in Palestine and on the other hand Zionism aimed to transform the Jewish people into a people not only of traders and intellectuals but also of farmers and artisans, associations for Palestinian pioneers arose throughout Europe , who provided the retraining. In 1939, a group of German-speaking Jewish youths also settled at the Rading in Loosdrecht. They were known as the youth dalijah and worked with farmers and artisans in the area to learn the trade. During the war, under the leadership of Joop Westerweel, a resistance group of both Jewish and non-Jewish people emerged who were committed to saving young people from persecution of the Jews. This volume describes the members of the youth dalijah in a personal way. The stories of their lives and fortunes, together with the many illustrations, are a vivid memory of this special group of young people.
