This is a handsome copy of "JANE EYRE" by Charlotte Bronte. Circa 1920's, or earlier (there is no date of publication stated, but the year "1926" is written at the front); Thomas Nelson and Sons; London. Nicely bound in soft leather with gilt on the spine, gilt top page edges, a ribbon page marker, a frontispiece illustration, and marbled end papers.
Condition:
Rubbing to the leather along the edges of the spine and at the cover corner tips. There is a patch near the bottom-right corner of the back cover where the leather has faded (see photo). Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. The text pages are in nice condition - clean and white with no issues found. Bright gilt top page edges. A blank rear end paper has a small pencil squiggle. The decorative front end paper has a couple of names handwritten...one in pen (dated 1926), and one in pencil. Tiny tear at the bottom edge of the spine. The rear end paper has a tiny tear at the top edge, and "1126" stamped in ink at the bottom edge. The tissue guard over the frontispiece is tanned. Overall the book is in Very Good- condition.
Synopsis
Jane Eyre is a famous and influential novel by the English writer Charlotte Brontë. It was published in London, England in 1847 by Smith, Elder & Co. with the title Jane Eyre, an Autobiography under the pen name "Currer Bell". Orphaned as a child, Jane felt like an outcast during her childhood. She was sent by her cruel aunt to a boarding school where she was met with further torment. After the devastating loss of a friend, she finds herself enrolled under a new headmaster at the Lowood School and finds her life drastically changed. She spends eight more years at Lowood, six as a student and two as a teacher. Her courage is tested once again when she arrives at Thornfield Hall, where she has been hired by the brooding, proud Edward Rochester to care for his ward Adèle. Jane finds herself drawn to his troubled yet kind spirit. She falls in love. Hard. But there is a terrifying secret inside the gloomy, forbidding Thornfield Hall…
