About This Item
London: Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. 1884. Early edition. Early edition. Original blue quarter cloth with paper-covered boards printed with colour illustrations to the upper and lower boards. Illustrated throughout in black and white by Randolph Caldecott. A very good copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth browned and a little cracked to the spine, the paper toned and marked and worn to the edges. The contents, with offsetting to the endpapers, are otherwise clean and bright throughout and without stamps or inscriptions. Juliana Horatia Ewing was a successful Victorian children's writer whose work had a notable influence on later writers such as E. Nesbit and Rudyard Kipling. Roger Lancelyn Green, children's writer, biographer and member of the Inklings group, described her writing as the "first outstanding child-novels" in English Literature.
