Green / teal cloth covered boards have gilt lettering to the spine and front cover of the book (denoting a 1st issue - the second issue has black lettering to the spine and front cover of the book). The text pages are clean and bright. Illustrated throughout with black and white illustrations along with four full color plates and a full color title page by Tasha Tudor. The dust jacket has some light toning / sunning, especially to the spine, along with several small to smallish edge tears and nicks. All four corners of the dust jacket have been clipped, but not price clipped as the two dollar price is still printed on the bottom front flap corner. Juliana Horatia Ewing (known as Julie to her large family) only lived to the age of 43, but by her death, she had published numerous books, short stories and articles, most of them oriented to children. During the 1870's and 1880's she was one of the most popular authors of children's works. Her writing influenced a generation of writers, including Frances Hodgson Burnett, Rudyard Kipling, and especially E. Nesbit. .
