About This Item

Louisiana State Univ Pr, 1984. First edition. Unknown. Fine/very good. Hardcover. First printing. xii+ 251 pp. with bibliography, index. Fine in dust jacket with sunning to the spine and the inner edge of the rear panel. The author examines the events of three sensational crime cases of late 19th century "Belle Epoch" France to reveal that the willful mangling of the Dreyfus trial was far from rare in the Third Republic. He concludes in fact that justice in this period was "hypocritcal in the extreme" with outcomes of trials were easily tainted by power and the influence of politics, money, and illicit sex. The tree cases are: The Steinheil Affair ("Sex, Sin and Murder"), the Humbert Affair ("Fraud As A Fine Art"), and the Caillaux Affair ("Justice As A Political Statement").
