Octavo, orange cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, 352 pp. Very Good, with neat former-owner bookplate; in a Very Good, price-clipped dust jacket with darkened spine & edges and edgewear that includes light chipping. From dust jacket: The main scheme of this book is to give a picture of the Irish countryside consequent on the revolution and the overthrow of the feudal land-owning system and to picture, by not stressing too much the local characteristics of this change, the passage from a feudal system to the growth of democracy and middle-class life. The peculiarly Irish characteristic of this change is typified in the hero Ramon Mor Costello (who has his replica on a smaller scale in the Russian kulaks who are rising from the Bolshevik revolution). He is a kind of Irish Shylock, and the plot of the story is the struggle of the rising middle-class to rid themselves of this incubus. He is the personification of the peasant grasping for power and he is finally overthrown by the beautiful woman of the old feudal class whom he marries. It attempts to give a complete picture of Irish country life as it is at present, with all the social elements that are struggling for power, the church, the professions, the shopkeepers, etc., and the desolation consequent on the wars, emigration, etc...

Slicker, is one of about 450 qualified members of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America, Inc., and its affiliate the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers. He was also the founding president of the the Florida Antiquarian Booksellers Association and is still an active member and committee chairman. In addition to keeping regular hours at the storefront location, Lighthouse Books participate as a vender in about a dozen book fairs, antiques shows, map fairs and related events each year. One such show is The Florida Antiquarian Book Fair, an annual trade show/charity benefit held in downtown St. Petersburg in the spring, that has become the oldest and largest antiquarian book fair in the Southeast; Slicker has served as Chair since its inception thirty years ago.
