About This Item

Various, 1928. Soft cover. Very Good. Various. Photographs, Drawings. Four items of paper ephemera, circa 1924-28, regarding Harry Houdini. 1) 'Margery' the Medium Exposed: Houdini Exposes the Tricks Used By the Boston Medium "Margery"...Also a Complete Exposure of Argamasilla, the Famous Spaniard...X-Ray Vision. [Adams Press, NY; Copyright Harry Houdini 1924. The scarce 39 + 1 page booklet, with photographs and drawings, in which Houdini exposes the techniques of one 'Margery the Medium'. In photoillustrated wraps, covers detached but present, a bit of soiling and some small chips to covers, else Very Good or better; 2) "Houdini Escapes from Reality" (reprinted excerpt of that article, pages 404-407 in The Psychoanalytic Review, Vol. XVI, No.4, October 1929). An interesting analysis of Houdini's motives and internal clockwork by psychologist Louis J. Bragman of Syracuse, NY. Paper is age-toned, bottom edge a bit tattered (not affecting text), else About Very Good. 3) "Houdini Lived to See His Name A Synonym For Escape" one page from the New York Times Book Review of June 24, 1928, wherein "Houdini. His Life Story" by Harold Kellock is thoroughly reviewed. Newsprint, quite yellowed and folded at an angle, a bit tattered at bottom edge without affecting text. Good plus. 4) A handwritten 3" x 5" note card with bibliographic information on "Margery the Medium" on both sides, written by Syracuse University psychology professor Wesley R. Wells, from whose collection of books investigating spirtualism this lot comes, and who authored Experiments in the Hypnotic Production of Crime [1940], Extent & Duration of Post Hypnotic Amnesia [1940], and Ability to Resist Artificially Induced Dissociation [1941], all in the Journal of Psychology. Wells' signature is at the top of the front cover of the 'Margery' expose. Leph
