New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons/Knickerbocker Press, 1894. First Edition. Octavo. A superb copy , 238pp. bound in full, rich red morocco with morocco doublures and silk in an edition of 12 specially bound by the Knickerbocker Press for the father of the author. Two letters laid in from Francis H. Saltus (author's father) to Edna M. Green. Francis Saltus Saltus (as he was known) led a gang of bohemians including his brother James and a Young James Huneker whose desire for absinthe was mixed with a devotion to the erotic and sensuous. (See Yungfrau, p. 19, Ophelia, p.31, and the Awakening, P. 230.) Laid in: From Francis H. Saltus (writing at the age 103) to Miss Greene who knew his sone though she was a member of the DAR. (1) 4 p.. ALS dated October 15, 1895. Refers to a waltz his son had composed in Paris in the earl 1870's and was performed there with him conducting an orchestra of 70 members. He notes of her many admirers but says none of can match his late son's literary and musical genius. (2). 2p.… Read More

Description:
Paris, 1868. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good. First Editions, 7 volumes published between 1868 and 1873. A complete set of what must have been one of the most impressive bibliographical publications of 19th Century France - indeed Europe. Copiously illustrated with facsimiles and colour reproductions, (many of which are fold-out and impressively large) of remarkable manuscripts and bindings throughout history. In contemporary 1/4 calf with raised bands and blue labels at one stage this set must have been particularly eye-catching but sadly time has taken its toll somewhat. In various states of condition ranging from Good/VG to Fair only. Most with substantial off-setting in places, many tissue-guards missing from the plates. Some occasional spotting and damp-staining to odd volumes but not terribly so. The bindings are overall in Fair condition with several split (and one entirely loose) backstrips and corners. This has been a working set and as well as bearing the bookplate of their original owner at… Read More

New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons / The Knickerbocker Press, 1927. Half-Leather. Very Good/No Jacket. Corners a bit rubbed, boards faintly soiled, ink date and owner bookplate of Robert N. Cherry on front flyleaf. 1927 Half-Leather. iv, 325 pp. 8vo. No binder's ticket, but appears to be a contemporary custom rebinding: blue leather spine and corners over blue cloth, gilt titles and rules, top edge gilt, new end sheets. "The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is the traditional name for the unfinished record of his own life written by Benjamin Franklin from 1771 to 1790; however, Franklin himself appears to have called the work his Memoirs. Although it had a tortuous publication history after Franklin's death, this work has become one of the most famous and influential examples of an autobiography ever written. Franklin's account of his life is divided into four parts, reflecting the different periods at which he wrote them.
