About This Item
Philadelphia: Printed for Mathew Carey, 1802. Early Edition. Leather. Very Good. Illustrated with engavings . Full leather with original red leather spine label. Raised bands. All maps and illustrations present. Early edition (probably second). Frontispiece. Corners and board edges worn. Purchased by Thomas Knight 1803 for $8.25 (page 913). Includes family records from 1803 to 1882. Some folding maps have small closed tears. Moderate foxing throughout. Full refund if not satisfied.Mathew Carey is considered one of the early prominent printers and authors in the newly formed United States. He started newspapers and wrote pamphlets on social and political topics. In many ways he swayed popular opinion through his publishing ventures (and was friends with some of the founding fathers of America, such as Benjamin Franklin and George Washington). He was also the first to publish an American version of the Douay-Rheims Bible (a Roman Catholic translation) in 1790. Additionally, he printed King James Bibles, one of which is this particular copy. A beautiful leather Bible with an interesting personal history.
