London: Richard Bentley, New Burlington Street, Publisher in ordinary to Her Majesty, MDCCCLXI. [ 1861 ] .. A very good two volume set, in matching half leather bindings. 8vo. 8.5" x 6" x 1". Original brown calf over brown washed silk covered boards. Spines with 5 raised bands, and bright gilt titles. Marbled endpapers and matching page edges. Each volume with an engraved armorial bookplate to verso of the front board: Sir Andrew Barclay Walker. Also, a second almost "full-page" engraved bookplate to the recto of the rear board (for his son): "William Hall, Baron Wavertree". Clean text throughout. A very good set with an excellent pedigree! Vol. I.: pp.32/pp.501; Vol. II.: pp.4/pp.455 . ** " William Hall, Baron Wavertree. Known as Colonel Hall-Walker (1856-1933), he became the 1st Baron Wavertree, a peerage that became extinct at his death in 1933. William Hall Walker, 1st Baron Wavertree (25 December 1856 � 2 February 1933) was a British businessman, art collector, and an important figure in Thoroughbred racehorse breeding. He was the son of Eliza Reid of Limekilns, Fife and her husband, Sir Andrew Barclay Walker (1824-1893), a wealthy brewer born in Ayrshire who expanded the family business to England and moved to live in Gateacre, Liverpool. A lover of horses, William Hall Walker was a polo player and in 1895 built stables near Liverpool for his polo ponies at what is now known as Grange Mews. " *** "Sir Andrew Barclay Walker, 1st Baronet (1824�1893) was a brewer and Liverpool Councilor. He was born at Auchinflower, Ayrshire, He was educated at Ayr Academy and at the Liverpool Institute. He followed his father (son of Peter Walker of the Fort brewery at Ayr), in to brewing. In 1879, on the death of his father, he gained control of the business and in 1890 he converted the private company into Peter Walker & Son Warrington & Burton Ltd. a limited liability company, several Pubs in the Liverpool and the north west of England still carry the slogan Walkers Warrington Ale in their frosted glass." - See Wikipedia .
