About This Item
Gulf Publishing Company, 1891. Early days in Acadia Parish, LA, which includes the communities of Crowley and Rayne, are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data in this brand new 49-page 8.5" x 11" spiral-bound book, printed on 60# opaque paper. The full-color front cover is protected with a vinyl sheet. The book includes excerpts from two hard-to-find vintage publications: Southwest Louisiana Biographical and Historical, edited by William Henry Perrin and originally published by the Gulf Publishing Company in 1891, and Louisiana, a Guide to the State, compiled by Workers of the Writers' Program of the WPA in 1941. In addition to the usual data found in county histories, this book details the introduction of rice culture, hay growing, and stock raising, and discusses topics like co-education at Acadia College and "erronous" Northern impressions about the treatment of blacks in the South. In addition to the many names mentioned in the history section, there are a number of biographies of prominent citizens: Henry W. Anding, Rev. J. Anthonoiz, Mathias Arenas, E.O. Bruner, Homer Barousse, Joseph D. Bernard, Welman Bradford, W.H. Cary, William C. Chevis, Professor T.C. Cherry, Raymond T. Clark, A.S. Chappuis, Philip J. Chappuis, Jean Castex, H.W. Carver, W.W. Duson, Louis Alphonse Duclos, Homer David, Martin Doucet, Melon Doucet, Joseph Fabacher, Theodore Flash, Dallas B. Hayes, W.E. Hockaday, Zeno Huber, Andrew Henry, Dr. D.P. January, Dr. W.T. Jenkins, Dr. W.A. Jenkins, J.W. Keneson, J.C. Lyons, E.W. Lyons, Dr. R.R. Lyons, Dr. J.A. McMillan, Dr. James F. Morris, V. Maignaud, Dennis Miller, Daniel Rose, Christian Ruppert, Robert B. Sloane, Ferguson B. Sloane, Felix Simon, Francois Savoy, Capt. John M. Taylor, John Welch, Dr. Rufus C. Webb, Col. James Webb, and Dr. Francis D. Young. The WPA book gives a nostalgic glimpse from a 1941 vantage point, including interesting historical notes, especially as they relate to sightseeing possibilities. The excerpt involves stops at Rayne and Crowley. A map of southwestern Louisiana is also included. . Limited Edition Reprint. Spiral/Comb. New/No Jacket. 8.5" x 11".
