Early days in Gallia County, OH and Gallipolis are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data in this NEW 25 Page Booklet reprinted from the 1892 Centennial edition of Henry Howe's Historical Collections of Ohio, The Ohio Guide, and other hard-to-find sources. The spiral-bound booklet is printed single-sided on 60# paper, with the fine print enlarged for easier reading. Among the many and diverse topics covered in the booklet are: the "Scioto Company" of Paris, which lured Frenchmen to "the free and happy life...on the blissful banks of the Scioto," Indians, the little French doctor's magic, hardships of wilderness life, the exciting saga of Mad Ann Bailey who died in 1825 at about age 125, General Edward Tupper and Col. Robert Safford. GENEALOGY BUFFS will find a list of 1888 county officials and businesses and biographical information on Col. William Duer, James Newsom, Simeon Nash and Joseph Drouillard. A 1933 history of newspapers in the county, a brief look at "Our House, a historic tavern in Gallipolis; the Gallipolis Roller Dam; newspaper columnist Oscar Odd McIntyre; tour information from a 1940 WPA project, Henry Howe's Ohio River journey in the late 1880s, and maps showing the 88 Ohio counties and 1805 Ohio are also included. .
