About This Item

London: Chelsea Press, 1990. First edition thus. Hardcover. Fine copy/fine. 8vo. Boards. Pp. xii, 372. Originally published at New York by Harcourt Brace, 1947. Just after the War the author, along with his friend W. H. Auden, was sent by the American Army to Germany to do an assessment of the devastating damage there. This is an account of that, but more so it is about what he observed. The author soon begins to empathize with many ordinary people who had retained their humanity despite everything that had happened to them.
