About This Item

London: Seeley, Service and Co. Limited. Good+ with no dust jacket. 1908. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. In a stunning red/gilt pictorial binding featuring Indians on the front cover and The Giant Buddha (in Japan) on the spine. The front cover is superbly bright, the spine is bright but with some odd fading to the curliques just above the Buddhas head. They are almost invisible. One black spot to the very foot of the spine, and both head and tail of the spine are 'pushed' from storage, but Overall an extremely attractive binding. FIRST Edition. The page fore-edges lightly toned with age but clean. Internally some browning to the endpapers and a long gift note on the front free endpaper = "John Lewis with best wishes from his sincere friend James Drummond. Edwinsford January 1 1908". (South Wales interest here as Edwinsford, a Manor House, established in the 1680s by Sir Rice Williams, High Sheriff of Carmarthenshire, is now derelict). Apart from this gift note and the odd pale scattered spot/mark, internally generally very clean. 335 pp + 16 page book catalogue at the end. Tissue guarded b/w frontispiece and 23 other full page plates. "Various tales of Missionaries across the world. From Red Indians to Greenland, Burma to East Africa; The Nicobar Islands to Fiji, etc, etc, including John Eliot, David Brainerd, Hans Dgede, William Duncan, Dr, Wolff, Samuel Marsden, John Williams, etc, etc.. A most attractive First Edition. See Images. ; Thick 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
