About This Item
[Hanover, NH]: Westholm Publications, 1965. 1st edition. Limited to 200 copies; this is number 19. Signed on the colophon by Herb West and the illustrator James W. Hamilton. Also inscribed by Hamilton on the colored front endpaper and signed again by him on a laid-in slip from the Quixote Collection at Dartmouth. The full text of West's farewell address at Dartmouth after teaching comparative literature from 1925-1964. Dartmouth censored portions of the address when it was broadcast later on the campus radio station. West responded by using his own publishing house to produce this book, with the omitted passages printed in red. 8vo hardcover. Vignette drawings in the text. 44 pages + colophon. Printed on cream wove paper at The Prairie Press in Iowa City. Fine in a Near Fine jacket with clear archival cover. An uncommon book by West, a popular professor at Dartmouth who was also an author, publisher, bookseller and collector. His other books include Modern Book Collecting for the Impecunious Amateur.
