Description:
Paris: Maurice Glomeau, 1921. Limited edition. No. 319 of 500 copies (of a total edition of 565.) A tale of love, jealousy and marital intrigue in 18th century France. All text is in French. Four color plates with facing tissue guards. First separate edition of this story by Restif De La Brettone (1734-1806), libertine French printer and writer, the prolific author of more than 200 rambling novels and memoirs, often risqué or pornographic but laced with sentimental moralizing. Memorably described by the 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica as a man who was "inordinately vain, of extremely relaxed morals, and perhaps not entirely sane. His books were written with haste, and their license of subject and language renders them quite unfit for general perusal." 58 pp. Paperbound 12mo. Textured cream colored wraps. Good with some external browning, chipping to the lower spine. Complete with the original glassine jacket, which is chipped along the spine but largely intact. Clean internally.
