Born in England to hotelier parents, after a stint in the army as a catering officer, Kerr emigrated to New Zealand as an army catering adviser in 1958 and by the mid-1960s was a regular cooking presenter on TV, the radio and in magazines. His first book, Entertaining with Kerr (1963) was an extraordinary commercial success.

This, his second book, was published at the height of his TV career in Australia and New Zealand before he went on to become famous internationally as 'The Galloping Gourmet'.   In the preface he expresses his desire to create a particular cuisine for the deep Southern Hemisphere.   Blending his classic European culinary training with local antipodean ingredients, Kerr typifies the 1960s down under; an unusual international looking cookbook - made easy with numerous step-by-step photos.
