London: James Phillips, 1790. Later edition of one of the earliest and most famous American shipwreck accounts. Barrow was a Quaker missionary on route from Jamaica to Philadelphia. His ship, the "Reformation," wrecked off the Florida coast. The survivors were captured by Indians - characterized on the title page as inhuman Cannibals of Florida - and eventually made their way to Charleston. The first edition of this account was published in 1699. Though reprinted several times after its initial Philadelphia appearance, all early editions are scarce. This one is listed in Howes as an aa. Book is disbound (no boards) but backstrip still attached, ex-library marks comprised entirely of stamp and blindstamp to front page (full-title) and two stamps in text (pgs. 17 and 121) at top margin, otherwise text clean and unmarked but mild soil and toned throughout.

Contemporary half calf and boards. Contemporary ink ownership inscriptions in front pastedown and front free endpaper. Calf and boards moderately rubbed and worn. Foxing and dampstaining throughout. A good copy. VAIL 905. AYER 72. CLARK I:73. HOWES D317. SERVIES 1257. A later edition of GOD'S PROTECTING PROVIDENCE..., originally published in 1699, and one of the most popular of 18th-century captivity narratives. The author and a party of Quakers were bound for Philadelphia from Port Royal when they were shipwrecked in 1696 near present-day West Palm Beach. Despite being robbed and abused by the Indians, they were allowed to make their way up the coast to St. Augustine. An unusual early Ohio imprint.

London: Mary Hinde, 1772. 12mo. [14],126,[4]pp. Contemporary calf, front joint cracked. Housed in a green morocco backed box. Scarce 18th century edition of a noted Florida shipwreck and indian captivity narrative. Dickenson, a Quaker merchant, departed from Port Royal in August 1696 with his family, a noted Quaker missionary named Robert Barrow, and more than 20 other passengers. Bound for Philadelphia, a storm shipwrecked their bark near present-day Jupiter Island Florida. Captured by Native Americans, they were stripped of their remaining possessions. The survivors endured an arduous journey by foot and canoe some 200 miles north to St. Augustine, where they arrived in starving and wretched condition. Taken in by the Spaniards, once recovered the group were sent on to Charleston, South Carolina, before eventually reaching Philadelphia. London: Printed and sold by Mary Hinde, 1759. Book. Very good condition. Hardcover. Fifth edition. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. [xiv], 126 pages of text, followed by [iv] pages of publisher's advertisement. Bound in full speckled calf by Riviere & Son; front hinge repaired, with minor rubbing to binding, and the boards are slightly bowed. The title page has archival mending where it is bound into the book, and about half of the pages have a small chip to the lower margin all of which have an old repair. The title page has the printing date written on the bottom margin, and several pages have minor soiling. Title continues "...they suffered Shipwreck; and also from the cruel devouring Jaws of the inhuman Canibals of Florida.
