About This Item

DICKENSON, Jonathan. The Shipwreck and Dreadful Sufferings of Robert Barrow, With Divers Other Persons, Amongst the Inhuman Cannibals of Florida.... Salem [Ohio]. 1826. 120pp. 12mo. Contemporary half calf and boards. Contemporary ink ownership inscriptions in front pastedown and front free endpaper. Calf and boards moderately rubbed and worn. Foxing and dampstaining throughout. A good copy. VAIL 905. AYER 72. CLARK I:73. HOWES D317. SERVIES 1257. A later edition of GOD'S PROTECTING PROVIDENCE..., originally published in 1699, and one of the most popular of 18th-century captivity narratives. The author and a party of Quakers were bound for Philadelphia from Port Royal when they were shipwrecked in 1696 near present-day West Palm Beach. Despite being robbed and abused by the Indians, they were allowed to make their way up the coast to St. Augustine. An unusual early Ohio imprint.
