Three important subjects in Natural Theology are considered: First regards the inorganic elements of the mineral kingdom, and the actual dispositions of the materials of the earth. Two: Relates to theories which have been entertained respecting the origin of the world and the third extends into the organic remains of a former world. Vol. I: xv, 443pp., (5)pp. introducing Washington Irvings' Astoria, vii-xi(1)pp. publisher's ad, Vol. II: 4pp., publisher's ads, (2)pp., vii, 131pp., with plates following which includes a large folding hand-colored sections of the Earth's crust with 66 other full page engravings of animal skeletons and bones through time. Bound in purple cloth, paper spine labels, an ex-library copy with their stamp on the front pastedown, evidence of bookplate removal, binding faded around the edges and spines some chipping to spine ends, cloth split on lower joint of volume two, scattered foxing throughout. A good set.

London: William Pickering, 1836. Book. Near Fine. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Volume I is 1837, and Volume II is 1836. The first volume appears to be a second edition, with an expanded pagination compared to the 1836 issue of that volume, and includes a corrigenda page for both volumes at rear. Two volumes in full textured brown sheep, with gilt spines. Speckled edges; marbled endpapers. Light staining and a few small scuffs to covers; moderate varied foxing to text, mostly front and rear, and toward edges. Old owner's name to top margin of title-page in Vol. I. Some scattered foxing to plates in Volume II. The coloured fold-out is in near-fine condition. Otherwise clean, tight and unmarked. Very neat -- a sound and handsome set.
