About This Item

Vendome: Typographie Lemercier et Fils, 1879. First printing. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition, 1879, tall 8vo, original half black leather and patterned boards, very good, some rubbing along joints and to corners, with inscription from Rochambeau to General W. W. Davis on the half title, plus two letters from March 1879 referencing General Davis, from Rochambeau (one on mourning stationary). 227 pp, illustrated, including some folding facsimiles of documents and writing. Rochambeau was a historian and archaeologist who participated in the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876, where he probably met General Davis. William Watts Hart Davis was a brevetted Brigadier General during the Civil War who participated in campaigns in South Carolina; he was a native of Bucks County PA and was, like Rochambeau, an avid historian of local history.
