Padova (i.e., Padua): Pietro Paolo Tozzi, 1610. First editions. Very Good. Two titles in one volume. 12mo (16 cm); 82, [2]; 82, [2]. Both titles within elaborate engraved borders (the first an architectural border with putti and figures, the second showing the emblem of the Accademia dei Fecondi); woodcut initials and ornaments. In early plain pastepaper boards. Text block untrimmed, preserving deckle edges. Occasional light damp stains.

References: Michel I, 254, #4 and #11; Bruni & Evans, Italian 17th cent., #314;

First editions of two works by Count Giovanni Battista Arrigoni (sometimes spelled with one R, Arigoni) of Padua, member of the Accademia dei Fecondi and founder of the Accademia degli Avveduti (sometimes spelled with one V, Aveduti). In the wake of Tasso's Aminta and Guarini's Il Pastor Fido, the composition of pastoral musicals spread fast through Italy's creative salons, organized as "Academies." The Accademia degli Aveduti, founded and directed by Arrigo, boasted the membership of the notable Tuscan composer Gaspare Torelli, and it is almost certain that Torelli composed the music for Arrigoni's pastoral play Il Fraterno Amore (Brotherly Love), published here with a dedication to Cosimo II de' Medici.

The second work, with its own title page and pagination, is the first edition of a collection of 133 baroque poems (under the stylistic influence of Giambattista Marino) dedicated to Cardinal Odoardo Farnese. True to form, the poet presents complex, highly-wrought linguistic curlicues to such mundane subjects as his admiration for a lady with blond hair to an account of an escaped pet dog. Printed at the end are six poems dedicated to Arrigoni himself by members of the nobility, the last two of these in Greek and Hebrew respectively.

Although the two works are commonly catalogued separately, it should be clear that they were intended to be issued together, as a single publication within one binding, as in the case of the present copy.

Description:
1624 BIBLE Biblia Sacra Tremellius Junius OT Theodore Beza NT + Apocrypha Latin
In 1565, French Protestant Theodore Beza issued an edition of the Greek New Testament with the Vulgate. His translation of the New Testament would become extremely important and popular throughout Europe, especially among Calvinists. According to many scholars, Beza's interpretation of the text, along with his translation, were extremely helpful to theological scholars who came after him.
This 17th-century Biblia Sacra features the famous Beza New Testament as well as the Junius & Tremellius Old Testament Latin translation. The Tremellius-Junius Bible, an important Reformed translation, was very influential on Reformation dogmatics which helped shape Protestant theology in the 18th-century. According to Fletcher, the pairing of these two translations are often found printed together. It features the Junius Apocrypha and a preface of Andrew Marvell (Andreas Rivetus).

1671 Catacombs ROME Subterranea Aringhus & Bosio Illustrated Roman Archaeology

Antonio Bosio, an early 17th-century Italian historian, was known as one of the leading spelunkers of his time. His searching of the catacombs of Rome lead to an incredible and highly influential book on Roman history and antiquities "Roma Sotterranea". This book contains descriptions and illustrations of Roman cemeteries and catacomb findings, artifacts, sarcophaguses, and cave wall inscriptions and murals.

Following the successes of Bosio's work, historian Paulus Aringhus published a Latin translation that proved to be just as popular as the original. This 1671 printing of Aringhus's "Roman Subeterranea" includes numerous full-page and in-text engravings and was published in Arnhem, Netherlands – a city not known for its publishing.

1696 1ed John Sergeant Method to Science Philosophy John Locke Descartes Ideism

John Sergeant was a 17th-century Catholic priest known for his controversial treatises. One such work was 'The Method to Science', a philosophical work written to object against John Locke. According to Hutton,
"Sergeant's critique of Locke was part of a more wide-ranging critique of what he called 'ideists', a category which yokes Descartes and Locke together. He targets Locke in his 'The Method to Science' [and] his principal objection to Locke's epistemology was its implicit skepticism. he charged Locke that his natural philosophy failed to provide universal conclusions or maxims".

Description:
Amsterdam: Abraham Wolfgang, 1688 A fair copy of the first French edition of Richard Blome's guide to British interests in North America with 6 (of 7) folding maps. The 1st edition was in English and published a year previously. The maps for the French edition were redrawn close copies of those in the English edition, and 4 of the maps in this copy have Robert Morden's name on them. The guide is a nice pocket size and was popular, however, some of the mapping is a little strange - the map of New York is notable in that Manhattan is shown as a peninsula not an island. This copy is missing the map of the Mid-Atlantic States - "Nouvelle Carte de la Pensylvanie Maryland, Virginie et Nouvelle Iarsey". The book is in contemporary full leather which is very worn with cracked hinges and a delaminating spine. The boards are reasonably sound with some leather loss at corners and a small area on the front board. The endpapers are marbled. Contents: 2 blank; title; avertissement 2pp; Text 1-331… Read More

Description:
This small volume contains the potery of Claudius Claudiani, known as Claudian (c. 370-c. 404 AD). A poet of Greek origin who wrote in Latin, he has been considered the last significant poet in the classical tradition and was in particular known for his epigrams praising Romans in significant political positions, as well as his poetry on mythic topics. He was considered a poet of importance in the Middle Ages.
This edition of Claudian's works was published by Daniel Elzevier, a member of the significant Dutch publishing House of Elzevier, in 1677. This is an excellent example of the small editions for which the House of Elzevier was particularly well-known, measuring approximately 2.5 inches wide by 4.5 inches tall, and its contents accord with their focus on classical works as well as editions of the Greek New Testament.
This particularly edition of Claudian's poetry includes a life of Claudian written by Giglio (here identified as Lilio) Gregorious Giraldi (1479-1552) taken from his work on the… Read More
