All are ex-library with small card pockets on front pastedowns, "South African Public Library" in gilt on the lower spines and small ink stamps "Westminster Libraries" on the title pages. The date "January 24, 1853" is written in ink on all the front pastedowns. Volume 1- 306 pp. Scuffed covers, with spine edges and corners fraying. Cloth beginning to split along front edge. Front hinge cracked. Upper corners torn away on front endpaper and title page, with loss of part of the "P" in the title. Text shows minor scattered soiling and foxing, but generally clean and unmarked. Volume 2 - 332 pp. Scuffed covers, with spine edges and corners fraying. Both hinges cracked, but holding. Rebound without the final ads in full brown morocco, painted and gilt, the spine vertically titled in gilt, the covers with a black frame outlined with decorative rules, the central panel in a diapered pattern alternating rows of black compartments with silver fleur-de-lys and brown compartments with gold fleur-de-lys, the endpapers of colorful flowers highlighted in gold, all edges gilt and gauffered with repeating rosettes.
