About This Item

London: Chatto and Windus, 1882. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. A companion work to Virginibus Puerisque (1881), collecting the more literary and critical essays left out of the first collection. In his preface, Stevenson (1850-94) describes the contents as "the readings of a literary vagrant". Includes essays on Victor Hugo, Robert Burns, Walt Whitman, Henry David Thoreau, Yoshida-Torajiro, Francois Villon, Samuel Pepys, John Knox, etc. Octavo: xxviii, 397 p. with 32 p. publisher's ads. Original gray cloth binding, with decorative brown, black, and gilt stamping and decorative endpapers. An especially nice example, with some light toning along the spine and a bit of edgewear to the boards.
