Attractive blind stamping on front and back covers. Title on spine in gilt. At the back there are sections entitled "The Bookseller Advertisement " with "Fragments" - "A Discourse concerning the Mechanical Operation of the Spirit, &c." Hinge cracked but text block still securely attached. Pages generally clean and bright with some foxing, more foxing and smudges on end papers. Adhesive residue on front end page from bookplate. Two previous owners' names on end papers. ; 7.65 x 4.75 x 1.10 inches; 323 pages .

First edition, octavo; [24],170,[2]pp. In contemporary full leather (a little worn), double gilt fillet to board margins, five raised spine bands, gilt lettered labels to second and third compartments, hairline split to head and foot of front hinge (with hinge remaining firmly secure), opening and closing leaves stained by turn ins, old ink ownership name to head of title page, otherwise a clean copy with attractive woodcut headpieces and capitals. The title page declares this volume's price as 3s 6d., adding that two volumes of Boileau's non-posthumous works may be had for 12s. This example was bound up as a companion to these two volumes and though it bears a "vol.3"spine label, is nevertheless a separate work. This is a very old (1771) book in what looks like its original leather bindings about a man in the 17th-century Spanish Court and his adventures there.The book's exterior is all leather and has worn areas on all edges and corners, along both verticle edges of the spine, and has some worn and darkened areas on both front and rear covers. On the spine itself, the leather is dried out and cracking and there is a piece at the very bottom that has been worn off of it. The interior book has past owners' names (including one from 1774) as well as other marks on the inside front and rear pages, foxing throughout the book, and light browning on all of the pages. Hoole's English translation of this epic poem written by the 16th century Italian poet, worked on while Hoole was supposed to be studying law. Front pastedown bears bookseller label and two previous owner bookplates, including that of Philip Hone, Federalist Mayor of New York from 1825-1826 and one of the founders of the New York Mercantile Library (rechristened the Center for Fiction in 2005). ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .

This is the author's revised edition, Agapida Edition, published in 1893. 2 volumes Beautiful books in light cream colored leather binding , high quality deckled pages and lovely Moorish gilt designs on the cover and spine. Each page is framed with Moorish scroll work. The photos throughout the books are covered with glassine paper. There is some darkening, due to age, along the beveled edges of the covers and the first few pages of vo. 1. Also an inscription and signature, dated 1937 on the third flyleaf page of vol. 1.. Otherwise, the book is in fine - near new condition.
