About This Item
New York: Macmillan, 1927. First American Edition. Octavo (22.5cm); dark blue cloth, ribbed, stamped in blind and gilt (on spine); 208pp. Spine sunned, gilt dulled; boards mildly soiled, rubbed and worn, with some material loss to leading corners and spine extremities. Binding shaken; ex libris on front pastedown; mild reading wear and spots of foxing intermittent throughout. Else Very Good or Better.
Despite the unusual subject matter, this book by J.W. Dunne, an English soldier and engineer, was very popular and well-read in its time. It expounds upon precognition through dreams, and his theoretical explanation for this phenomenon involving properties of time and relativity. His theory, dubbed "Serialism", garnered interest from academic communities but was never accepted by mainstream science. Regardless, many authors (especially those of fantasy/speculative fiction) drew inspiration from Dunne's work and continue to do so today.
