About This Item

Barcelona: Graphos Colectivizada, 1936. A beautifully-produced report/commemoration of the fierce fighting that broke out in Barcellona two days after the Fascist uprising against the Second Spanish Republic, which initiated the Spanish Civil War. In this engagement the Fascist military was defeated by various people's militias of poorly-armed peasants and workers. A vivid description can be found in "Man's Hope" by Andre Malraux (NY, 1938). The book consists of stunning artwork by "SIM" [Jose Luis Vila Rey]. First Edition. Large format (10.5" x 13.5") spiral-bound wraps. The text is in Spanish, French, and English. Unpaginated, but 59 pages. Produced by the "Confederacion Nacional del Trabadjo" [National Confederation of Labor] and the "Federscion Anarchista Iberica" [Spanish Anarchist Federation]. In Very Good, (Plus) condition. Edges are rubbed and there is a one-inch chip on the front cover where the printing has peeled. The text, with its spectacular illustrations, is very bright and clean. There is a hint of wrinkle along the lower edges, perhaps from some previous exposure in damp. The Spanish Civil War produced much distinctive art work, but this stands alone as an eye-witness visual account of a major event of the Twentieth Century. Little is known about the artist, who signed his work as "SIM", but through the decades his illustrations have been used in other publications.. First Edition. Soft Cover. Very Good (Plus)/No Jacket. Illus. by Jose Luis Rey. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
