These 16th-century essays on non-violent resistance and civil disobedience, by the two Bordeaux-born friends, are here revived, as they have been during times of political unrest. Between 1906 and 1908 Tolstoy used extracts from Boétie's Discourse of Voluntary Servitude in three of his books. In 1907 Gustave Landauer made the Discourse central to his German anarchist book, Die Revolution. This translation of the 1930s marks the Spanish Civil War. Contents include La Boétie's essay of 37 pages; seven Cartas de Montaigne relativas á La Boétie and several brief essays on friendship; and Traducción de los Ventinueve Sonetos de La Boétie.
