Description:
A First UK printing published by Jonathan Cape, London in 1973. The BOOK is in near Fine condition and appears unread. Light pushing at the spine ends with some mild offsetting to the end papers. The boards and pages are exceptionally clean. Free from inscriptions and stamps. Some minor mild blemishes in places to the front text block. The black top stain remains vibrant. The WRAPPER is complete and is in VERY GOOD++ or better condition. Exceptionally bright colouring with no fading to the spine. A little edge wear at the spine ends with a small closed tear to the front upper edge. The Marc Getter wrapper artwork looks very striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. A lovely example of a scarce major Pynchon title which was the Winner of the 1973 National Book Award. Rare to find in such collectible condition. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.

The sole UK printing published by the Hogarth Press in 1948. The book is in Very Good++ or better condition with moderate toning and spotting to the end papers and text block. The pages are clean. Number '11' of only 750 copies issued. Numbered and signed by the author to the limitation page as called for. Five full page B/W plates by Lucian Freud which are all in wonderful clean condition. The buckram-backed marbled boards and leather spine are very sharp with light rubbing to the edges and corners. The gilt titling remains bright. Slight pushing at the spine ends. Free from inscriptions and erasures. The elusive printed Glassine WRAPPER is present and is lacking the spine section. There are some losses to the spine area to the rear panel. It has some edge wear, chipping and creasing in places - see images. The front flap with the printed title and price is present. The wrapper is extremely scarce and fragile, and few have survived. The book and wrapper are protected in the removable Mylar archival cover and presents very well. 'William Sansom was once described as London's closest equivalent to Franz Kafka. He wrote in hallucinatory detail, bringing every image into pin-sharp focus. He fell from favour, but now there is a movement to rediscover his finest works.' (The Independent). Scarce with such attributes. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.

The First UK printing published by MacGibbon & Kee, London in 1957. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition. Slight pushing at the spine ends. A little toning to the text-block with light spotting to the prelims. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ condition with just light edge-wear. A little toning and marking to the rear panel. A few age related markings to the front panel. Light toning to the spine and flap edges. No fading to the spine. The wrapper presents very well in the removable Brodart archival cover. The book has been inscribed in the year of publication by the author to the front bank end-paper : 'To Ozzie, An old and wise friend. I'll make the next one thicker!, Bill Hopkins, Nov 1957'. Underneath in another hand is a pencilled name 'Oswald ?'. This right wing Nietzschean debut novel is noteworthy in that the publisher voluntarily recalled all known copies, and had them destroyed, as a result of critical allegations of fascist themes. The First UK printing published by Peter Davies, London in 1945. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition with just some very light pushing at the spine tips. Light fading to the spine ends corresponding to the losses to the wrapper spine. Free from inscriptions and erasures. A small neat bookseller sticker to the lower front pastedown. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good+ condition. Some losses to the spine ends and the lower front edge. Mild edge-wear with some nicks, light creasing and minor losses. The unattributed wrapper artwork remains striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. The book, the author's first novel, was printed in conformity with the authorised war economy standards and is a very scarce survivor. It is highly likely that the book would have been printed in a small print run. I can only see one copy having appeared at auction in the last 30 years, and it is unclear as to whether that copy had a wrapper or not. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books…
