About This Item

Bath: Cedric Chivers, 1970. Gold title on red cloth boards which have one very small minor mark to front and just a touch of wear to front spine fold. Internally there is one very small mark to front endpaper else very clean, tight and unmarked. A Very Good+ copy. Dustjacket is also VG+. 315 pages. 9 illustrations. Library binding but never issued to a library. Translated from the French by Lucy Toulmin Smith. Originally published in 1889, revised in 1920, this work now appears as an Academic Reprint. Working mainly from contemporary records, the author describes a nomadic aspect of Chaucer's England that is virtually extinct. These wanderers, merchants, pedlars, outlaws, preachers and pilgrims, forerunners of the printed word, served as a link between the human groups of various districts, bringing news of their neighbours and of the stirring events of the time. An authoritative and very readable piece of 14th century English social history. **** NOT EX LIB **** C3A. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
