Good/No Jacket. 1743 pages, plus 80 pages of front matter including an Introductory Survey by Harrold; also, Chronological Outline (1830-1901), biographical chronologies, Selected Bibliography. Excerpts from writings on philosophy, social sciences, science by an array of authors including Carlyle, Macauley, Cardinal Newman, John Stuart Mill, Thackeray, Ruskin, Matthew Arnold, Robert Louis Stevenson. Text is laid out in two columns per page. Royal 8vo (6-3/4" x 9-1/2"), faded blue buckram, faded lettering on spine overwritten by hand in silver gilt, hinges cracked (with tear to last page of book along gutter), edges/end papers/page margins age-toned, bookstore label remnant on rear free end paper. Name of former owner and year 1948 written on front free end paper, underscoring and/or marginalia on approximately 25 pages in the Introductory Essay and a few other pages.

Heavier or oversized items may incur a shipping surcharge, which will be stated to the buyer before finalization of the transaction. Shipping charge may be reduced on some books weighing less than 1 lb to U.S. addresses. International Priority shipping charges may be reduced on books that fit in a USPS small flat-rate box.
