Name of former owner Prof. Warner Berthoff, date Sept. 1960, note "From the library of Dr [Samuel] Chew" (Bryn Mawr College) written on ffep, WBB's underscoring and notes in pencil throughout (in his small, neat hand, and quite interesting). Laid in 4"x6" postcard reproduction of Childe Hassam's "Boston Commons at Twilight," 1859.

Includes "Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu", on Ted Williams. 8vo, yellow cloth with usual Knopf gilt lettering, top edge tinted brown, unusually heavy foxing to boards, soil to their exposed edges, only faint foxing to text-block edges, minimal shelf wear, in unclipped, age-toned DJ with 1" tear in front panel at top, raggedy along crown, normal shelf wear to bottom, light foxing to interior. "Good" rating is a compromise between the foxed boards and the mostly clean pages - only one margin bracket in pencil observed, and a tiny pencil note on rfep.

Except for small marks next to a few titles in the table of contents, pages are clean.

Mitchell, W.D. Paden. Dates of the essays, some written in English and some translated from Danish for this edition, range from 1938 to 1958. 8vo, cranberry-red cloth with gilt lettering on spine, blue end papers, corners sharp, boards slightly bowed, in unclipped shelf-worn and rubbed DJ, slight vertical indentation to front panel and board. Pages bright and unmarked. Laid-in clipping of newspaper review by Anne Born (probably from the TLS) of this book.

Excepting the title essay, which was a commencement address, the chapters originated as articles in the New Yorker on a variety of modern art topics, artists, and the art-viewing public. Illustrated throughout with b&w art reproductions. Trade paperback, light shelf wear, slight curl to wraps, faint foxing to top edge and a few spots elsewhere, a couple of the front-matter pages rumpled at top, binding tight and a bit stiff, pale tan stain to dedication page from laid-in newspaper clipping. Underscoring and/or marginalia by former owner Prof. Warner Berthoff on approximately 30 pages and inside back cover, concentrated in an essay on Frank Stella and one on Marcuse's (and Kafka's) treatments of "art and life". The laid-in clipping, a Nov. 1972 TLS review of the book conveys with this copy.

Essays assembled as a posthumous collection, by Bernhard Blume and Roy Harvey Pearce. 8vo, black cloth with blind letter B on front board, silver gilt lettering on spine, no visible exterior wear save light dust soil to top edge, extremely faint foxing to fore-edge, boards ever so slightly bowed; in DJ with diagonal chip to front flap as if price-clipped, except the (UK) price is present at the bottom of flap. From the library of Prof. Ann E. Berthoff, her marks and one note in very light pencil observed on approximately six pages and the rear flap of the DJ, and a few page reference notes related to Kleist in ink on the book's last page after the index.
