Signed and dated at end: William Grey, Woodstock, Dec. 30, 1865. William Grey responds to the accusations of John McWhinnie in the Woodstock Sentinel "in reference to his conduct on the Market question" and other matters of a municipal nature. Only 1 or 2 copies are known to be extant: Library and Archives Canada and the Metropolitan Toronto Library. Born on 18 October 1812 in West Pennard, Somersetshire, England, William Grey settled in Oxford County in 1825. He was a gentleman farmer and owned considerable town property in the environs of Woodstock, Ontario, including the Royal Hotel (erected, in 1843). He was in the Town or County Council much of the time. He was the second Mayor of Woodstock and held the same office several terms for at least 25 years. He was also one of the oldest magistrates in the county. In addition, he was an insurance agent for several of the best American Companies, the first President of the Port Dover and Lake Huron Railway Company, President of the Oxford Loan and Savings Society, the Woodstock and Norwich Plank and Gravel Road Company, and the Woodstock Board of Trade. He married Susan Westbrook of Oakland in October 1832. They had two children, one dying in infancy, and the other, John George. Born in Scotland, John McWhinnie edited the British American from 1849 to 1853. He started the weekly Woodstock Sentinel with his son-in-law, Alexander Hay, on 1 January 1854. It ran until 1870..
