About This Item
Springfield: Department of Buddhist Education, Buddhist Churches of America, 1995. Pamphlet. Tri-fold brochure, 3.75x8.5 inches. 1995 reprint, very good condition. Explains meaning behind the characters in "Eitaikyo" and other Buddhist concepts. Reverend Tsuji was the first U.S. citizen to serve as Bishop of the Buddhist Churches of America. He was born in British Columbia, and attended Ryukoku University in Kyoto before returning to Canada shortly before WWII. He was later sent to Slocan during the incarceration of Japanese Canadians. Tsuji moved to San Francisco and opened the Buddhist Bookstore along with becoming president of the Institute of Buddhist Studies in Berkeley. As a minister, he opened the first Shin Buddhist temple in the Southeast, a position that he held at the time of this pamphlet's publication.
