Steel-engraved frontisp., illustrated title page, numerous steel-engraved plates, over 100 plates. Green publisher’s cloth, illustrated gilt vignette on front cover, gilt decorations & corners, gilt lettering on spine, marbled fore-edges of textblock (slight rubbing, very minor bumping to corners), still a VG bright copy, w/ former ownership signature on verso of ffep. First edition, early printing, of this excellent and well-illustrated work examining the technological, industrial, and economic progress of the United States through the Civil War. The work includes section on agriculture, cotton, sugar, steam engines, railroads, cotton & woolen manufacturing, silk industries, paper, fire arms, cutlery, hats, carriages, coaches, silver ware, leather, boots, choes, clocks, watches, fur trade, an extensive section on the sewing machine, and much more. Of interest is the section at the rear on hospitals, mental institutions, and prisons included at the end.
