The oldest illustrated version of the Divine Comedy, dating from the second quarter of the 14th century, The 37 vivid and charming miniatures in colours and gold are attributed to the workshop of Pacino di Buonaguida, an Italian painter active in Florence c1303-1347. The text is also beautiful and complex, in two columns with rubricated initials, surrounded by the commentary glosses in the margin. The Palatine codex 313 contains a very large part of the Commentary by Jacopo, son of Dante, although his glosses are often corrupted and altered. Almost every gloss is marked with the initials Jac (Jacopo). As well there is the important commentary of Jacopo della Lana, and Guido da Pisa,. The codex is written in littera textualis. The manuscript is also known as the Poggiali Codex because it was in the collection of Gaetano Poggiali (1753-1814) , an Italian publisher and bibliographer. Beautifully bound in full leather, blind stamped and tooled, very imposing on the shelf. OCLC: 1021381888; Folio 13" - 23" tall .
