Chromo-lithographed title page and 24 tinted lithographed plates (by Robert Dudley) and one chart, all with tissue guards. Quarto. Original green cloth elaborately decorated with gilt images of the sea, cables, and the US/UK symbols, gilt and blind-stamping to spine, gilt edges. The spine has an old repair with some rubbing at the tips, at the same time endpapers renewed with lovely marbled paper. Covers have some rubbing and bumping at the corners. Some foxing to title page, and here and there throughout, first blank corner has a small lack, occasionally very small humidity mark at the top margin in a few of the plates, but otherwise sturdy and unmarked, a nice copy. A large folio in very good condition, some minor wear to the slipcase, some light pencil notations on first blank of facsimile, otherwise clean and fresh. One of the best known city books of the late 15th century. The first Latin edition was published in 1575, the German edition in 1576 -- its magnificent detailed plates took it firmly out of the medieval period and into the Renaissance. Box has raised bands to the spine and gilt; book has blind ruling. Text is facsimile of the original at the Staadtsbibliothek, Berlin, Ms. Germ. Fol. 62323 full page illuminations in colors and gold. The artist of the miniatures is not known, although it is very likely that they were produced by someone working on the famous German manuscripts known as the Codex Manesse, written between 1304-1340. Front cover detached, light general wear to the edges with a few chips, spine covering worn. Interior paper browned, as normal, some creasing to a few of the pages, clean and unmarked, quite fragile but still intact. A very scarce copy of this droll little book. The publisher remembers, "The draftsman Richard Seewald one day brought a manuscript with funny poems [...] from an unknown man named Hans Boetticher, who later became famous as Joachim Ringelnatz ." Blue hard boards with a doll in yellow walking with a toy Captain of the Guard. Boards are rubbed at the edges, blue cloth spine a bit worn. Interior missing first blank, old cello tape at front hinge which has yellow and split. The book features dolls and toys at play with rhyming captions, pictures are illustrated on one side with uncoloured mirror image so the child can copy the colouring. About one-third of the blank images have been coloured in (quite well, we might say! ) , while a few have partial colouring, and some are still blank. Last blank present, a few small foxing marks, paper is creamy, one page edge has a small chip, pages not coloured in are generally clean and nice. A stunning facsimile edition of the Divine Comedy held at the Seminary Library at Padua, acquired by their librarian in 1720 as part of the book collection of the Paduan count Alfonso Alvarotti. It is profusely and richly illustrated in gold foil and colours, with large illuminations at the beginning of each of the three canticles, consisting of historiated initials, surrounded by a frieze of vines, flowers, and “drolleries” of human and animal figures. Large frontis engraving with cherubs and Father Time (? ) , by Esplugas and Amills, plus 138 other engravings of famous people throughout history. Octavo, in contemporary leather with gilt dentils to front and back, gilt in the spine. Each engraving with a tissue guard. Engravings are signed by many different artists, but the most common names are Juan Amills, Buenaventura Planella, and P. Esplugas. There is no name, no printer, no location, no date, not even a title except the spine title, no pagination or leaf signatures. Many of the individual engravings are digitized at the Biblioteca Digital Hispanica. Our date of c1840 is based on the working dates of the artists and engravers. Although these books of famous people were popular in Spain in the mid-1800s, we found only one reference to this unnamed work. An oversized folio leather clam-shell box, with an explanatory booklet of 103 pages, and with 50 leaves with facsimiles of Leonardo's and his circles work, beautifully printed recto and verso on handmade paper. The works of Leonardo -- including his earliest known drawing -- and of his circle, collected at the Uffizi in Florence. Includes 11 drawings by the master himself, as well as 39 by his students. The works are in pen and ink, chalk, pencil, and silver-point. Condition is very good. This is a beautifully printed reproduction of the timeless works by da Vinci and his circle collected in the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice, including the famous image of the Vitruvian Man and the Portrait of a Man in Red Chalk (probably a self-portrait of da Vinci) , among many others. The drawings consist of 26 works by da Vinci, 33 from his school, and 13 by other sources, all printed on handmade paper. Interior has school book plate and removed pocket scar, the library stamped every page of this book, including the plates and sometimes the stamp is on the edge of the plates (one way to stop people cutting the plates out!).Otherwise clean and sturdy.
