About This Item

London: Barrie and Jenkins Ltd. Very Good/Good. 1978. First Edition. Hard Cover. Sm 4to 0214202550 Dust jacket unclipped, sunned spine. Black cloth with bright gilt titling on spine. Very slight lean. Illustrated end papers. No ownership inscription. xii, 401 pages clean and tight. A renowned expert on antiques for the collector and dealer has produced a new indispensable work of reference. Within the last decade interest in the later periods, from the Regency to Art Deco has increased to the point where they form about 80 per cent of the market. One reason of course is that more 19th century objects are available for the general buyer, although the demand, and specialised collecting interests, have led to a steep rise in prices. This comprehensive volume deals with furniture, metalwork, glass and ceramics, with emphasis on special subjects, exhibitions and designers. It is international in scope, with examples from the United States and Europe as well as the British Isles. Many of the illustrations are in full colour, and there are hundreds of subjects specially photographed in private collections which have never before been displayed, as well as examples from public museums. No collector or student of the period will want to be without this treasure of information, which is arranged alphabetically, with full cross-reference, and is unique in its wise, and at times witty, approach. The information is contained in about 1 500 entries alphabetically arranged covering such subjects as: Artists, craftsmen and manufacturers. Exhibitions during the period which influenced the arts, e.g. The Great Exhibition of 1851, (London), The Armory Show, 1913, (New York and Chicago). Pottery and porcelain. Metalwork (bronzes, silver, spelter, etc.) and ancillary crafts. Furniture. Glass. Miscellaneous techniques. Styles and design. Technical aspects of manufacture, including the influence of the machine on design. There are frequent cross-references, and appendices on Marks etc, and a Bibliography. .
