(New York, 1950): Random House. First Edition. Octavo. First printing signed by the author on the first leaf within the spider web design, 307pp. There are seventeen stories in this volume, all but one are set in Arab North Africa, the Far East or Latin America. They share an almost Gothic preoccupation with violence, particularly that violence arising out of the clash of the Westerner with the alien world of the West. Bound in rust cloth designed with a spider web in gray, spine lettering in black, silver and gilt, black endpapers top edge black, a very nice copy, near fine in good unclipped pictorial dust jacket with chipping to spine ends, corners and flap edges, some tiny, closed edge tears with old clear tape mends to underside of jacket and spine faded.
