London: Sampson Low Marston Searle and Rivington, 1890. First Edition. Publisher's Original Cloth. Good. Small 4to (26cm). Pictorial cloth, with gilt blocked lettering to covers and spines. Two volumes, in six divisions. The subscribers' edition. Black endpapers. To front of Vol I, "This leaf not to be bound with the Volume", stating the book, "is not obtainable from the ordinary Booksellers" and is prepared for subscription only at a price of 9s for each volume. Tissue guarded frontis portrait in Vol I of Stanley. 165 woodcuts and maps, including 3 fold-out maps. Fold out coloured map to Vol I has 4cm tear to centre fold adjacent to spine, otherwise in bright condition. Vol II has a large fold out newspaper obituary mounted to flyleaf, from The Standard, of Wednesday, May 11, 1904, the day after Stanley's death, with some closed tears. Rear gutter cracking. Vol IV has fold out map to rear, intact. VI contains the other fold out map, attached to rear, with tears and a chip, approx a square inch or so, missing from map. Also has a cutting from The Daily Telegraph mounted to flyleaf, dated Aug 9, 1913, with reminscences of Stanley. Wear to cover edges, spines darkened, spine ends worn, rubbed, with small nicks. Slight lean to a few copies. Scattered light foxing, a few gutters cracked. Overall, somewhat worn, but bindings remain firm, internally clean and unmarked.
